Dear Reader,
I hope you are having a satisfying reading season this summer. And if it has been a bit off, the right books will always be there waiting patiently for when the time is right. Currently over here as I type this we are experiencing a peaceful morning rain shower. So a cozy moment with a book is calling my name. I just finished Love and Summer by William Trevor (which was a great little summer read btw) so I might have to browse my personal library for a new one to read here in a sec and utilize this rainy ambiance to its fullest.
For the month of August our book pick for Textured Book Club is Writers & Lovers by Lily King. It has been chosen for the following reasons:
It’s set in the summer so it felt appropriate to wrap up our summer months.
It’s set in the 90s! ...[sigh] the good ol’ days. ;)
It’s a genre our book club hasn’t read yet (romance, books about books, literary fiction).
It’s a story centered around having the courage to transition and pursue new chapters in life.
It’s listed in my Summer Reading Assignment.
Synopsis: Writers & Lovers by Lily King
Blindsided by her mother's sudden death, and wrecked by a recent love affair, Casey Peabody has arrived in Massachusetts in the summer of 1997 without a plan. Her mail consists of wedding invitations and final notices from debt collectors. A former child golf prodigy, she now waits tables in Harvard Square and rents a tiny, moldy room at the side of a garage where she works on the novel she's been writing for six years. At thirty-one, Casey is still clutching onto something nearly all her old friends have let go of: the determination to live a creative life. When she falls for two very different men at the same time, her world fractures even more. Casey's fight to fulfill her creative ambitions and balance the conflicting demands of art and life is challenged in ways that push her to the brink.
Writers & Lovers is a transfixing novel that explores the terrifying and exhilarating leap between the end of one phase of life and the beginning of another.
I would love for you to join me online here if Writers & Lovers sounds of interest to you so that we can engage together about it throughout the whole month of August.
And please let me know if you have any books you have in mind for us to read together in the future. I enjoy a broad range of styles so we are not necessarily genre specific in our book club.
Also - if you are reading our July book we have about a week left so be sure to chime in here to share any thoughts you have on it. I gotta tell ya, the story had me a bit riled up at times.
Well that’s it for today. Have a blessed day and happy reading!
Love,
